The Water-Babies by Charles Kingsley
In
the beginning Tom did not know about God. He was a little chimney-sweep. He was
in under control Mr. Grimes. When Tom wanted to sleep he had to wait Mr. Grimes
got away from him. One day he woke up very early it was about 3 am in order to
catch salmon. However, no one cold woke up on that time. In the morning, Mr.
Grimes invited Tom to go Harthover. Suddenly, Tom met Irishwoman but Mr. Grimes
did not pay attention to her. So, Irishwoman was only interested about Tom. She
asked many things, including religion.
When
he woke up and he was suddenly in the stream. That stream turned out the
water-babies. There, he was very happy. He got many experiences such as there
were water flowers and Tom tried to pick them. Suddenly, he found out that they
lived and could speak as well. He thought that many creatures in the
water-babies could speak and understood what he said. He met shark, and salmon.
There, water animal taught Tom about life. Some animal had frightened face that
made Tom so scary. Tom also met many fairies. They did not want to take Tom
unhappy but they told him that he was naughty. So they taught him to be good.
Water animal, Salmon, taught about kindness and leave many things that is not
useful.
Moreover,
Tom met lobster and Tom was very happy seeing that lobster taking seaweed on
his knobbed and that lobster cut it by his jagged and entered it to his mouth. Tom
was scientific men and ingenious men. Tom sat with the lobster waiting for
Prof. Ptthmllmsprts and Elly. Elly was Prof.’s daughter. That Prof ever found
the cannibal island. During the meeting with Prof. Tom always got many advises
from him such as he said to Tom, “Always remember that the one true, certain,
final, and all important difference between you and apes is, that you have
hippopotamus major in your brain and it has no.” Tom went up the river
carefully because Tom knew that Mr. Grimes had entered to the water-babies.
In
addition, he met one of fairies who always cuddled babies. She named
Doasyouwouldbedoneby. She eventually nursed and loved Tom. Tom had a mistake in
water babies, he stole some candies which were saved by fairy. That fairy knew
about what Tom have done but she did not get mad to Tom because she knew what
would happen to Tom.Suddenly, Tom’s body is prickly. So Mrs.
Doasyouwouldbedoneby did not want Tom and his friends did not want to play with
him again. Tom told his problem to another fairy. That fairy named
Bedoneasyoudid. Tom asked to her in order to make his body came back to the
normal condition but she said that it cannot be done because it was your
mistake. Eventually, She made a plan to meet a girl who would teach him in
order to omit the whole thorn on his body. After that they could stick together
and she turned out Elly. There was one thing that made Tom curious. It was
about a beautiful place that Ellie was always visited but she did not tell Tom
about that. So, tom asked to Mrs. Bedoneasyoudid about that place. She said,
“Little boys who are only fit to play with sea-beasts cannot go there. Those
who go there must go first where they do not like and do what they do not like
and have somebody they do not like.” That fairy narrated about some people who
did not want to work and did everything. They just did all things that were
pleasant for them. He told to the fairy that he wanted to look for Mr. Grimes.
He traveled to the Other-of-nowhere. Mr. Grimes was punished by fairies because
he destroyed many things in water babies.
Tom
endeavored to find Mr. Grimes. Eventually, Tom walked towards the great
building and wondered what it was. He guessed that Mr. Grimes was inside it.
That was true. Mr. Grimes was there. Tom was assisted by many truncheons. So,
Tom came to chimney no. 345 and he was shocked because Mr. Grimes changed. He
became so sooty, bleared, and ugly and he was trapped in the chimney. Mr.
Grimes admitted that everything was his fault and he realized that he had been
wrong. He guessed that Tom would laugh at him but tom had a kind heart. He did
not avenge Mr. Grimes. Mr. Grimes cried and blubbered like a baby and Tom also
cried. Mr. Grimes and Tom looked up to someone who gave an advise to them. She
turned out Irishwoman who met them the day they went out together to Harthover.
She asked truncheon to take Mr. Grimes away and gave him his ticket-of-leave
and she told to Tom that his work in water babies was done. When Tom neared the
island, someone sat on the rock and behold her. She was Ellie. Tom and Ellie
were surprised because they looked different and they had grown up. Tom went
home with Ellie. He became a great man of science, and could plan railroads,
and steam-engines, and electric, and electric telegraph, rifled, and so forth.
All he knew from what he learnt when he was a water baby, underneath the sea.
