What Is Literature? Several Definitions of Literature According to Some Experts or Researchers

 Hi, everyone.

Do you know what literature is? If you don't, please don't worry because in this moment I would like to share about several definitions of literature according to some experts or researchers that I have collected from any sources. Here we go.

1. Andres (2012)

Literature comes from the Latin word “Litera” which literally means an “acquaintance with letters”. It is a body of work, either written, oral, or visual , containing imaginative language that realistically portrays thoughts, emotions, and experiences of the human condition. Literature is also a product of particular culture that concretizes man’s array of values, emotions, actions, and ideas. It is therefore a creation of human experiences that tells about people and their world. Moreover, it is an art that deals with the works of imagination, aesthetics, and creative writing which are distinguished for the beauty of style or expression.

2. Mir (2018)

Literature is important in everyday because it connects individuals with larger truths and ideas in a society. Literature creates a way for people to record their thoughts and experiences in a way that is accessible to others, through fictionalized accounts of the experience. Literature affects people by teaching them , entertaining them, and inspiring them to take action in life. Literature is important for many reasons, including its ability to provide pleasure to readers, to help build experience, and to help readers emphatize with others and to develop thinking skills.

3. Lombardi (2020)

Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. It is derived from the Latin word literature which means “writing formed with letters”. It most commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and in some instances, journalism, and song. Literature represents the culture and tradition of a language or people.
