What is Pragmatic Awareness? Several Definitons of Pragmatic Awareness According to Some Experts and Researchers

Hello, everybody.

Today, I will share regarding several definitions of Pragmatic Awareness that I gathered from journal article and the other sources.

There are some explanations about Pragmatic Awareness according to some experts and researchers.

1. Refieyan, Sharafi-Nejad, and Eng (2014)

Pragmatic Awareness is the awareness of target language sociolinguistic and sociocultural features. Also, it can be defined as conscious, reflective, explicit knowledge about pragmatics. It is also the knowledge of those rules and conventions underlying appropriate language use in particular communication situations and on the part of members of specific speech community.

2. Takahashi (2012)

Pragmatic Awareness is regarded as the recognition or knowledge of the way where language is employed to encode social meaning through conscious reflection of relationships among factors involved in pragmatic comprehension and production.

3. Ali (2013)

Pragmatic Awareness is part of metapragmatic competence which deals with the ability to analyze language use. It is the prereuisite for pragmatic acquisition in which pragmatic competence can be hardly acquired without it.

4. Camryn (n.d.)

Pragmatic Awareness is regarded as one of the most challenging aspects of language learning and comes only through experience.

5. Ekin and Damar (2013)

Pragmatic Awareness is one of the inevitable aspect of communicative competence which sets off hard tasks for learners in EFL contexts because of the limited sources of target language in contests. It necessitates the knowledge and competence of both socio-pragmatic norms and pragma-linguistic norms of the language.
