A.
Characterization of Jack Townsend
From the beginning, the author has
depicted Jack Townsend to become a top guy because Eugene O’Neill wants to
prepare a tragedy. Besides that, he wants to show that there is no person who
is perfect or fully good and fully bad. For instance, from the text it can be
found that Jack Townsend has everything such as he is popular guy, a very
talented sport player, rich, having a perfect girlfriend, loved very much by
his family but he is also irresponsible what he has done and he is greedy in
any aspects as well.

important? You mayn’t think so. It’s not important to you, yuh.

d.
You say the doctor gave you money? I’ll give you ten times as much as he did.
(Murray’s face grows livid.) I’ll see that you get so much a year for the

week-ends.
c. He had asked a doctor to abort
Nelli.
He
was the only doctor I could find who would do that sort of thing.
|
B.
Plot
In Abortion,
Eugene O’Neill wants to show an irony that happens to the main character, Jack
Townsend. In the beginning of the story, Jack Townsend’s life is narrated as a
perfect one. For example he could go to university with its amazing facilities
inside and people around him always supported what he did. In the contrast, he
did a contemptible thing, he raped a poor girl who of course she did not have
same social status with him. It implies that Jack Townsend is not what is
guessed before. Eugene O’Neill wants to convince that seeing is not believing
as well.
