Hi, everybody.
What are you doing? Are you looking for information of advantages and disadvantages of Active Learning? You don't need to worry because you're in a right place. I have collected the data regarding this topic from any sources and here we go.
A. Advantages of Active Learning
According to Rodriguez (2018), Panopto (2019), & Drew (2020), there are several distinct benefits of active learning. These benefits are as follows:
- Teachers and students get more on-on-one interaction. Students receive frequent and immediate feedback from the teachers during active learning activities,
- Students learn through collaboration and interaction with other students, engaging more deeply with the course content and building invaluable social skills,
- Teaching is more inclusive. Students with different learning styles get a personalized experience,
- Active learning increases critical thinking,
- It gives the students a larger role in their learning environment,
- It increases students’ attention,
- It stimulates discussions,
- It prolongs engagement and motivation,
- The students learn information within its context, and
- The students learn from trial and error.
Badin (2018), Rodriguez (2018), & Drew (2020) state that there are some weaknesses of active learning. These weaknesses can be seen as follows:
- Active learning requires more spontaneous and flexible lesson plans,
- It limits the amount of material that can be presented at once,
- It creates the potential for distractions if students are not monitored,
- Students could develop misconceptions,
- Not all outcomes are predictable,
- It is often perceived as boring,
- It may be viewed as irrelevant or unnecessary by some students,
- It often requires more time for the teachers to prepare well,
- It is less efficient than didactic learning for presenting foundational knowledge, and
- It may be frustrating for students who are prepared to participate.
